Following a leaked promotional video and images that surfaced on the internet earlier this month, Samsung has officiallyannounced the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. The news comes only a couple of weeks before the company's Galaxy Unpacked event on August 5.
Samsung launched the first version of the Galaxy Z Flip back in February, complete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855. This time around, the 5G version features the recently announced Snapdragon 856 Plus 5G chipset.
But even with the new chipset, all specs remain the same.
On the front is a 1.1-inch Super AMOLED cover display for notifications, while the inside features 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED Display. As for cameras, the Z Flip 5G has a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens.
However, the Z Flip 5G won't be available in the same color options as the original version. With this model, you'll have the choice between Mystic Bronze (which appears to be the theme of Samsung's upcoming devices at Unpacked) or Mystic Gray.
There are a few upgrades to the software, though.
When the Z Flip first came out, features like Flex Mode weren't fully optimized yet. The feature, which utilizes the phone's free-standing hinge, allows you to set the phone down on a surface like you would a laptop.
From there, it splits the display into two smaller screen so you can watch content on top and interact with it on the bottom. Since the feature is officially compatible with YouTube, users can now watch videos simultaneously commenting without interrupting the experience.
A new camera update also makes it easier to shoot from different angles in Flex Mode. Whether you want to capture content from higher or lower angles, you can double-tap on the display to move the camera's preview mode from the top screen to the bottom.
There are also new multitasking capabilities. With App Pair you can choose to pair any two apps of your choice that you'll then be able to use at once in the Multi-window tray. For example, if you're sending photos to your friends, you can set your Messaging and Gallery apps to open at the same time.
The Multi-window tray is also compatible with Samsung's Edge panel feature. So, you can easily access the tray by swiping the edge of the screen.
As for availability, the device will officially go on sale starting August 7. In terms of pricing, the Z Flip 5G will set you back $1,450. It's a bit more expensive than the $1,380 for the standard model, but the increase makes sense considering you're getting that 5G boost.
